The environment and safety business is active in environmentally friendly production, the use of clean fuel, industrial accident prevention as well as contingency planning for the safe coexistence of employees in industrial spaces.
Although developing economies are not known for their attention to the environment,SK has been a leader in our region.
In 2004, SK developed internal policies to improve air quality and workplace environment. We have used these activities to serve as a catalyst to raise awareness of social responsibility among other business partners in the region. Specific activities have included trying to improve regional air quality through activities to prevent VOC and noxious odors as well as improving the desulphurization of kerosene and diesel products through fuel quality upgrades.

Korea's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy is developing hydrogen stations based on SK Energy's accumulated energy and environmentally sound technologies. We have been designated by the Ministry as the supervising company for this development and are now in a position to contribute to the development of the nation's alternative energy sources.

In addition, the company is developing a device for reducing exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles and technology to use landfills as a gas resource. SK Energy is providing its vast knowledge of environmental management and clean production technologies to its partners.

We have adopted a green purchasing policy, the first in the refining industry to do so. Moreover, we issued a safety, health and environment (SHE) report to encourage interested parties to better understand our efforts at environmental management. In addition, SK Energy sees the prevention of safety and health crises as one of the core elements of corporate management and has made major efforts to eliminate potential dangers for the improved safety of workers, residents and customers. We have established systems for preventing accidents and procedures for handling emergency situations.

In addition to creating an environment where all employees can engage in their work without worry over safety issues, we also instituted a sophisticated on-site health and safety management system. We are keenly aware of our responsibility to our employees, which includes both preventing mishaps and promoting wellbeing.
In 2005, we will strive to do our utmost to gain the trust and recognition of all constituents, whether workers, residents or customers, as a safe company and a good corporate citizen.
